James A. Davids, J.D., Ph.D.
Jim Davids is currently practicing law at the Virginia Beach law firm of Singer Davis. From 2003 – 2018, he served as an Assistant and then Associate Professor in Regent University's Schools of Government and Law. Courses Jim developed and taught include U.S. Constitutional Law, Election Law, Political Philosophy, the Faith-Based and Community Initiative, Appellate Advocacy, Christian Foundations of Government, and Trial Practice.

Prior to joining Regent in 2003, Jim was the Deputy Director and Counsel of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Task Force for the Faith-Based & Community Initiative. As Deputy Director, Jim audited the Department of Justice to determine the barriers faith-based and community organizations faced in participating in DOJ-funded programs, and he monitored cases which impacted the Faith-Based & Community Initiative.

Before joining the Department of Justice, Jim was a founding member of a Chicago law firm where his experience included trying cases ranging from medical malpractice and federal regulatory actions to First Amendment and civil rights disputes. Jim is licensed to practice law in Illinois, Florida, and Virginia, he is a member of the bar of the U.S. District Courts for the Northern District of Illinois and Eastern District of Virginia, and he has been admitted to the bars of the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

Jim for 40 years has been a member of the Christian Legal Society, which is the oldest and largest professional organization of Christian attorneys in the U.S. Jim served on CLS’s Board of Directors for 11 years, including two years as CLS President. While in D.C. after his service at the Department of Justice, Jim also served CLS as Legislative Counsel, during which he advocated on Capitol Hill for religious liberty and pro-life legislation.

Jim is a graduate of Calvin College and Duke University School of Law, where he served on Duke's Law Journal. Demonstrating lifelong learning, Jim in 2012 was awarded a Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration. Over the past few years, he has authored law review articles on faith-based prison programs, the history of the Establishment Clause’s “pervasively sectarian test,” and additional articles on religious liberty. Jim has also authored op-eds that have been published in local and national newspapers.
